iMac or Mac Pro?
Marco makes some valid points about the longevity of a Mac Pro, in regards to upgrades, as opposed to an iMac, but I still think that for most users (even heavy-duty users), the 27” iMac is one of the best computers you can buy.
For instance, Marco also raves about the new Apple 27” Cinema Display, saying that that coupled with a new Mac laptop will replace most people’s desktop computers. OK, so why not just get the iMac? It’s the same monitor and has a computer built in.
I’ve had my 27” iMac for almost eight months. I can say without a doubt that it is the BEST computer I have ever owned. Not the best Mac. The best computer. Period.
Now, I went all-out and got mine with the i7, upgrade the RAM to 8GB before even turning it on, etc., but the fact that the only change of any actual difference to the newest iMac is that the video card is better (the change in processor speed is so minimal) and I have an SSD option (but not even a great SSD option, if I’m being honest), to me, shows that this is a machine that has real staying power and that I’m not going to outgrow very soon.
The Mac Pro is awesome, no doubt, but if you don’t already have the monitor, to me, it basically negates a big half of Marco’s point.
I continue to think what I thought in November. The 27” quad-core iMac is an ACD with a Mac Pro included for kicks.
